What does a company car cost per month?

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read · Source: Swedish Tax Agency

The lease payment is only one of the costs. On top of it come tax, insurance, fuel, servicing, tyres, congestion tax and employer contributions on the benefit, on different invoices from different suppliers. The guide goes through each item, shows what the most popular company cars cost in 2026 and how to work it out for your own.

In short
  • In Ynnor's table, the 25 most popular company cars cost between 8,245 and 15,753 kr per month, before benefit and employer contributions.
  • Vehicle tax is 360 kr per year for an electric car and several thousand for a petrol or diesel car in the first three years.
  • The driver is taxed on the benefit value, but the company pays 31.42 per cent in employer contributions on it.
  • If the driver covers at least 30,000 km for work, the benefit value drops to 75 per cent.
  • Congestion tax, parking, damage and the time spent looking after the car are not in the industry comparisons. They are in your books.
  • If you do not know what each car costs, you do not know which one to replace either.

Which costs make up the cost of a company car?

The industry comparisons count only a few items. Ynnor counts depreciation, fuel, servicing, insurance and vehicle tax. Kvdbil counts depreciation, financing, insurance, servicing, tyres and tax, but no fuel, and includes VAT.

For a benefit car, the employer contributions on the benefit value come on top, paid by the company in addition to what the driver is taxed on. Then there are costs no comparison includes but you still pay: congestion tax, parking, the excess on damage, excess mileage on return and the time it takes to handle it all. They only show when you add up the invoices per car.

What does the vehicle tax cost?

It depends on the fuel, the emissions and the age of the car. A petrol or diesel car pays a higher tax, malus, for three years from first registration. The basic amount is 360 kr, plus 107 kr per gram of carbon dioxide between 75 and 125 grams per kilometre and 132 kr per gram above that.

Diesel also pays a fuel supplement of 13.52 kr per gram of carbon dioxide and an environmental supplement of 250 kr. After three years the tax drops to 360 kr plus 22 kr per gram above 111 grams. An electric car only pays the basic amount, 360 kr per year.

What does the benefit value cost the company?

The benefit value is what the driver is taxed on, but the company pays employer contributions on the same amount, 31.42 per cent in 2026. It is a real cost that rarely ends up on the car in the books.

The benefit value is calculated from the price base amount, 59,200 kr in 2026, the car's new price, the government borrowing rate and the vehicle tax. For a car with a new price of 507,000 kr and vehicle tax of 7,688 kr, the benefit value comes to about 8,741 kr per month, according to FAR's worked example. The employer contributions on that are about 2,746 kr per month.

Two things lower the benefit value. If the driver covers at least 30,000 km for work in a calendar year it drops to 75 per cent, and the distance has to be shown, in practice with a mileage log.

For electric cars the new price is reduced by 350,000 kr, for plug-in hybrids by 140,000 kr, at most half the price. A government inquiry, SOU 2026:33, proposes phasing the reduction for electric cars down to 200,000, 150,000 and 100,000 kr in 2028 to 2030 and then removing it. It is a proposal, so check what applies for the year you are calculating.

What do the most popular company cars cost in 2026?

Ynnor has calculated the running cost of the 25 best-selling company cars in the first half of 2026, published by Företagarna in June 2026. The figures cover depreciation, fuel, servicing, insurance and vehicle tax. Benefit and employer contributions come on top.

CarCost per monthBenefit value per month
Kia EV38,245 kr4,483 kr
Volvo EX309,971 kr4,964 kr

Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid11,487 kr7,434 kr
VW ID.712,788 kr6,132 kr
Tesla Model Y AWD15,753 kr6,800 kr

The range in the table almost doubles from lowest to highest, for cars that are all common company cars. Kvdbil reached similar levels in March 2026, including VAT: from about 8,260 kr per month for a Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid to 10,420 kr for a Kia EV9.

What does not show on the invoice?

Three things are missing from every comparison above.

Congestion tax and parking. Both vary with the driver, not the car, and neither is on the lease invoice. A car commuting into Stockholm every day can cost up to 135 kr per day in congestion tax alone.

Damage and return. The excess on damage, wear beyond the normal and excess mileage are charged at the end of the contract, often months after the car was handed back. It rarely ends up on the right car in the books.

Time. Someone receives the invoices, books servicing, answers the driver and chases the mileage log. That cost sits in a salary, not in a car budget.

The figures are rarely missing, they are in six different places. What is missing is someone adding them up per car.

How to work it out for your own cars

  1. Take the lease invoice or the depreciation per car and month.
  2. Add the vehicle tax from transportstyrelsen.se, divided by twelve.
  3. Add the insurance premium per car.
  4. Take last year's servicing, repairs and tyres per car, divided by twelve.
  5. Take fuel or electricity per car from the card invoices.
  6. Add congestion tax and parking from the notices.
  7. Work out the benefit value on the Swedish Tax Agency's site and add 31.42 per cent of it.

Do it for each car, not for the cars as a group. It is the difference between the cars that tells you which one to replace, which driver drives privately at the company's expense and where the money goes.

FAQ

Is an electric car cheaper for the company?

Often, but not always. Vehicle tax is 360 kr per year against several thousand for petrol and diesel, and the new price is reduced by 350,000 kr when the benefit value is calculated. But the purchase price and depreciation are higher, and Ynnor's table has electric cars at both the bottom and the top.

What is the benefit value of a car in 2026?

It depends on the new price, the vehicle tax and the government borrowing rate. The base is 29 per cent of the price base amount, 17,168 kr per year, plus a share of the new price plus the vehicle tax. The Swedish Tax Agency has a calculator on its site.

What does the company pay on the benefit value?

Employer contributions, 31.42 per cent in 2026. On a benefit value of 8,741 kr per month that comes to about 2,746 kr per month.

How do we lower the benefit value?

At least 30,000 km for work in a calendar year gives 75 per cent, and the distance has to be shown with a mileage log. Electric cars and plug-in hybrids have their own reduction of the new price.

Is congestion tax included in the benefit value?

No, not since 2018. If the company pays the congestion tax for private trips it is a separate benefit, see the guide to congestion tax.
